Tips on getting a scholarship:
For many, the dream of a college education never becomes a reality because of financial constraints. This, however, does not have to be the case.
There are numerous scholarships available to assist students. Unfortunately, many students miss out on these opportunities simply because they do not know where to look or the right questions to ask. Below are some tips to consider when seeking scholarship information.
- Students planning to attend a college or technical school after graduation should start identifying scholarship sources and opportunities during their junior year in high school.
- A good place to start is with your school guidance counselor. Set up a time to talk with your counselor. Share information about your academic, as well as, personal goals.
- Determine what your strengths are and focus your search on opportunities that you qualify for and apply. Many scholarships do not depend solely on high grades or financial need, but are given based on factors such as student activities, interests and talents, age, ethnic background, areas of study and parent’s work or military service.
- Carefully watch deadlines and application requirements. There’s nothing worse than taking extra time to complete an application to find out it’s too late to apply or that you’ve supplied the wrong information.
- Request information from the colleges and universities you are interested in attending. Many institutions have their own scholarship opportunities.
- "Surf the Web"; the Internet is a great resource.
- Stay positive and don’t get discouraged-it can be a frustrating process.
