Abortion Related Tips:

An abortion is the premature termination of pregnancy ending in the death of the embryo or fetus.

A pregnancy that ends early, but where the embryo or fetus survives to be born as an infant is instead a premature birth. In medicine, a pregnancy that ends because of an accident or natural causes is qualified as a "spontaneous abortion", while a pregnancy that ends because of deliberate interference with that pregnancy is qualified as an "induced abortion." Spontaneous abortions are also referred to as miscarriages. In common parlance, the term "abortion" is used exclusively for induced abortion.

The ethics and morality of induced abortion have become the subject of an intense debate in the past 50 years in various areas of the world, including the United States of America, Canada and a number of countries in Europe.

Abortion procedure:

Abortion is one of the most common surgical procedures performed today. Having an abortion may feel especially intimidating if they have received inaccurate or distorted information about abortion. The fact is that a first-trimester abortion is twice as safe as a tonsillectomy.

Information is an integral part of the comprehensive care these clinics offers. At most clinics, what happens before and after an abortion is just as important as the procedure itself.

The medical tests, information, and counseling you receive are intended to make sure that your abortion is as safe as possible and that you are fully informed about all your reproductive options and are comfortable.

In most clinics, an abortion is preceded by a series of medical tests and counseling sessions. First, you will be asked to fill out a medical history form. after filling out the medical history, you will have pregnancy and blood tests.

Pre-abortion counseling usually includes two components or sessions. First, you will meet privately with a specially trained counselor and you will be encouraged to talk about your feeling. Next, you will be given information on the abortion procedure and its possible risks and complications.

At most clinics, a local anesthetic is included in the price of an abortion.

The vacuum aspiration procedure is generally used for abortion during the first-trimester. Dilation and Evacuation methods are used in second-trimester abortion and are performed by a limited number of providers.

Abortion risks

Like any surgical procedure, abortion is not without risks. In regulated legal clinics, there is a small risk of serious complications from the most common surgical abortion procedures. These risks include perforated uterus, septic shock, sterility, and death. The exact risk and type of complications depend on the abortion method as well as the clinical and hygienic conditions.

The rate of hysterectomies (removal of the uterus) for all abortion is less than 1 in 1,000 cases, and death occurs in fewer than 1 in 200,000 cases.

The complication rate for abortion is extremely low. For first-trimester procedures, the overall complication rate is less than one percent.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a vacuum aspiration abortion performed in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy is seven times safer than giving birth and 1oo times safer than an appendectomy.

Studies have found that in developed countries where abortion is legal, the risk of serious physical complications of an abortion is less than 1%. In countries where abortion is illegal, this percentage is much higher, although the exact figure is unknown. This is likely due to the inherently dangerous nature of unregulated illegal surgery by doctors of dubious skill or by persons with no or insufficient medical training.
